Project Overview Document
In August 2011, UN Environment published an Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland, an independent scientific study of the environmental and public health impacts of oil contamination in Ogoniland and options for remediation. The report recommended a series of technical and institutional actions to be undertaken to ensure that the environment in Ogoniland is cleaned up and livelihoods are restored.
In December 2018, building on its 2011 Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland, UN Environment began a new project that aims to strengthen the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) and its Governing Council, so that they can discharge their responsibilities better and clean up oil contamination in Ogoniland.
This document provides an overview of UN Environment’s support to HYPREP for the Environmental Restoration of Ogoniland.
